PostSubject: Help please. What's the best rust remover?   September 17th 2014, 10:44 am

Question  I have a beat-up rifled percussion barrel with a rusty bore. I want to clean out all of the rust as thoroughly as possible and then evaluate it to see if it's worth salvaging. What's the best solution to use. I've been told a 50-50 mix of ATF and acetone was good but would like some input please.

Maybe give Evapo-Rust from Hawgs old post a try. Sounds like the results he got were good

Very Happy

drummy my friend is 100% correct. Thanks buddy for posting that rust remover.

Bob,
I used this stuff in a rusty barrel and it got rid of the rust. I removed the barrel and then I put a tooth pick in the nipple and stood the barrel up in a bucket. Try to keep the barrel straight up and down. Then fill the barrel with the evapo rust. I left it in the barrel for 48 hours. Got rid of the rust but get ready to view the pitting. Don't get that stuff on anything you don't need to. It says it removes the bluing on the outside of the barrel. Keep in mind that I didn't have massive rust so your time may be longer in the bucket or the results may differ.
Rifle shoots great though.

Good luck.

I've also used the evaporust and it works. Hardest part was sealing the BP.

Another product which is used in bluing is called White Metal and it only attacks the rust and bluing which is what it was made for chemically removing rust prior to bluing...Mix as recommended and immerse for a time indicated...Brownells carries the product and I have used it on numerous projects...

The evaporust is also a great product...

Thanks for the tips. Some local guys said that white vinegar works too ... and lemon juice. I think I'll test the choices I have right now on some rusty nails first and see if any of them work well. If not, I'll order some evaporust.
