Hey Ray, will this be a ground blind hunt? I want to loan that HD camera to you this time so we'll get super high quality video! I can send my tripod to so you dont have to rely on shaky hands to hold it lol.

After reading the replies and  given it some thought I am leaning in favor of taking the .58 with me into the blind this season and keep the .50 as my back up as it was intended.
Next time at the range I'm going to try 90 grains 2F, .018 with mink oil, if I can get it down the barrel,.570 Hornady L/B and CCI Mag Percussion caps.
Thanks again for the replies and opinions.

Ray, If I get back from October fest early enough tomorrow, I am going to set up the chrony and get some numbers with 80gr 2f Goex for you. Just finished filling up some powder tubes now, thats all out of the way, going to set up the chrony on my tripod next.

Okay Ray

Goex 2f, .020" patch lubed with both mink oil and frog lube, 278gr round ball .570"

70gr - 1348 FPS AVG
80gr - 1435 FPS AVG
90gr - 1519 FPS AVG ( I had a high shot of 1543 on my 3rd which probably sped up this FPS a bit, shots 1 was 1503 - shot 2 was 1509 which seems most accurate)

I did 16 shots total today with some experimental shooting with and without the sun shades. I will just leave them off as it hardly made a difference today even with clear blue skies.

Thanks for the info Jonathan. Lots of difference in the numbers. I'm using the .58 no matter what the numbers. I'll just keep a watch full eye on the distance.

Thanks again,
Ray..........

scratch

I just finished looking at the numbers Jonathan posted for me along with the Goex and Lyman ballistics.
Seems that the Lyman and Goex charts are no where near Jonathan's. Between the 3 there's from 104 to 361 fps differences when comparing the charges. I guess the best thing to do is chrono your own rifle and loads if you really want to know your fps.
I'm going to go with Jonathan's numbers. Only difference we have is the patch. I'm using .015 and he used .020 for the testing. Next time at the range I'm going to try .018. If it works out for me I'll be close to Jon's numbers. I'll be hunting with my.58 this year with the hopes that the hunting gods smile at least once so I can fill one tag.
Thanks again Jonathan :tup2

Ray............. :rtup

There's too many variables to right the ballistics in stone..........

yep no ones numbers will come close to what the factory uses IMO. They use much different methods/environment when doing their testings. One thing that backs up my velocity readings is the fact I can put that info into a ballistics calculator and then test it on the range for accuracy in the drop the chart shows with my velocity readings. So far, everything has been dead on, even at 170 yards.

The bottom line Ray is knowing where your ball hits at your hunting ranges. Numbers aren't that important for open sights. The .58 will be effective at the ranges that you can see the sights and target.

:rtup

I agree with Pete. I feel that the numbers are good to know but not all that necessary when hunting. I will sight that .58  in for 75 yards but I won't be afraid to take that lung shot at one that's standing 100 yards away. I'll just raise it up about 6"s and I'm sure it will find it's mark.
Thanks for the replies.......

Don't know yet Pete. Just used that number for the sake of the post. I will find out next time at the range. I will post the drop so we all know.
