PostSubject: CVA NW Accura V2 not firing?   October 20th 2014, 3:00 pm

Hello everybody.

Very nice site you guys have here.

Being new to muzzleloading I was hoping to get some information from you all.  I just recently bought a new CVA Northwest version Accura V2.  I took the rifle out to shoot this weekend but ran into a little problem.  Here is everything I was using RWS musketcap, BH209 and Shooting a Hornady Great plains 385gr bullet.

Before taking the gun to the range I cleaned it to the CVA specifications.  First off I fired 2 caps to dry out anything in the gun.  Next I added 90grains of BH209 and pushed in the bullet.  Caped the gun and fired.  No fire.  Cap went off but would not start the powder.  I tried 2 more caps with no luck.  Removed the plug and removed all the powder and bullet.  Started over and re-shot.  Still it would not fire.  Am I doing something wrong?  I fired a cap only and shot a leaf off my shooting bench so I think I'm getting something out of the cap.

Is anyone else having this problem with the new NW muzzleloaders and BH209?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bryce

I doubt BH 209 will fire with a musket cap. It needs a full strength 209 primer.

Thanks for reply.

Reading up on the CVA website I thought that's what this new NW model breech plug was specifically designed for BH209.  They recommended using the RWS musketcaps.  Would Triple 7 ignite easier than BH209?  Should I try that?

With Idaho's rules we can't use 209 primers.

Thanks,
Bryce

Muley is right that's why its named Blackhorn 209. Smile   T7 loose powder will ignite much better than BH209, that's what I would use in your case if you cant get real black powder.

Correct, BH209 requires a 209 primer.

The NorthWest will do fine with T7, Pyrodex, American Pioneer and good ol Goex black powder. I currently use 80gr 3f Goex and a 348gr Powerbelt Flat Point.

Welcome to the forum as well!

Oh man I feel dumb.  Smile

Thanks for the recommendations fellas I will go that route.

If I'm reading it right I should get 777 FF?

Frontier - Should I get 2f Goex blackpowder or 3f?

I'm shooting a .50 cal.

Thanks,
IB

There really isn't an answer for that. You can shoot either one. The gun will tell you which one it likes best by the groups it shoots.

3F will have a bit less fouling, a little more power for the same amount of 2F, and also have very slightly faster ignition. It still doesn't mean it will be more accurate.

It's all part of muzzleloaders. Finding what your gun likes best. That also applies to bullets/sabots.

Either 2f or 3f will work fine. Mine actually shot better with the 3f Goex but it all depends on the projectile you are shooting. Mine just seemed more consistent and grouped tighter with 3f.
