PostSubject: CVA Hawken build #3   October 31st 2014, 8:32 pm

Lucky number 3 hopefully!

Got the stock stripped of all parts, I won't have to do much sanding at all, just knock down some rougher areas and some scratches but a very good stock to work with right off the bat is a huge welcome. All the brass doesn't need any work either.

The lock I just spent an hour polishing all surfaces that rub against each other. You talk about a huge improvement with just that. Before it felt like it was jamming up the surfaces were so rough.

Now on to the triggers. I just have to polish one section where it breaks free and then oil it and the triggers will be finished as well.

Going along smoothly so far. I even mounted my .58 Hawken barrel into it and it dropped right down into place perfectly.

Update:

Trigger polished and breaks super clean!
Bedded tang with Acraglas.

Tomorrow I will pull the trigger out and acraglas under it as well since thats a weak spot on a sidelock that has the tang screw, screwing into the trigger plate.

Well, I ended up cutting all the bedding out this afternoon. It did not set up right, I think my acraglass was old and not up to the task. I will redo it once I find some in town.

While the barrel in factory form looked perfect from the outside, The inside view was a whole new story and you can easily see why I bed ALL of my traditional sidelocks regardless of two piece tang/barrel set up.

Now I have a problem! I shot the .50cal barrel today and 3 out of my 4 shots in the bulls eye were touching. I REALLY hate to mess with that.

I have pictures but the dog is bugging me for his walk. So when I return I will post pics.

First 2 shots at the top. Next 4 were with adjustment.

First shot out of the barrel, I recovered this pristine patch

I'd shoot it until it didn't group good and then mess with it .. but that's just me. I doubt it would get worse if you bed it.

yeah I actually used jb weld this time, I actually kind of prefer it now, it seems to set into the little stuff to nicely and comes out very smooth.

Even though it was a freezing 28* today, I still took the Hawken out for a little more play time. This time I used moly grease on all the mating surfaces of the lock and inside the triggers. Huge different over the frog lube. Again the rifle shot great for no load work at all. I am sure I can fine tune it later down the road but for now, just enjoy it until the real work starts.

Well, shes been stripped down, sanded, fine sanded, washed down, and is awaiting a final 220 grit sand job before I apply Nut Brown stain. Just going to do a couple coats and take it easy so I don't cover any grain.

Gotta give it another week before I can really buff it and then wax it. Just got it all together to make sure everything fits and then let it sit in the closet and set up. Brass is going to get a brushed looked, no ugly shiny smooth stuff.

DONE! All stock finish is FINISHED, had to rebed the tang because the citristrip turned it soft when I stripped the stock. Just gotta wait for it to dry, put the tang screw in snug and shes all ready to go.
