When I load this gun using the short starter the muzzle is so sharp it cuts the patches. Can I smooth this out a little with e-paper or what? Question

You can use some 400-600 grit sand paper and with your thumb, cone that area and remove the sharp edges. If thats a new gun, some of that remington 40x bore cleaner may be needed to cut back the sharp rifling.

I think they're about the same. I've never noticed much difference.

Use the fine sandpaper to help the crown though like Jon said. Your thumb or forefinger makes it into a nice little funnel and gets rid of the sharp edge.
