A St. Louis Hawken? Is that the shorty version from CVA? How long is the barrel and what is the twist?

I had posted a Craigslist ad looking for a CVA Mountain Rifle stock.  A person responded and wanted to sell me a CVA .50 cal. St Louis Hawken for $150.00.  I turned him down...maybe a mistake???

Good deal if the bore is clean and pit free. By the time I finish them and do my magic they sell easily for double that and then some.

One option a lot of guys over look. You can try to locate a spare .54 cal barrel and have it bored smooth to a .28 gauge. That's taking the grooves out to smooth. Now you can use it for small gaming with shot loads.

True, but the guys who do it are backed up a year with work.

I'd like to bore out my .50 to a .54 slow twist, but i'm not the patient type to wait that long.

I bought a .54 cal barrel from Colerain and had them leave it smooth.  28 ga. That matched my rifled barrel. I switch it out with my pinned barrel on my early lancaster. I load 80 gr FFg Goax, opw, cushion wad, 120 gr of shot and osc. At 40 yards I average (for 5 shots) 23 BB's in the head/neck on a turkey target. I've shot squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, chucker, quail and a woodcock with it. That's given me more fun for my bucks. The money was worth my fun. I still had to finish  (touch hole, front sight, brown and underlugs in the dovetails) the barrel. I've been using these switchup barrels since 1996. The barrel was $165 and the componants for a new smoothy $700+ It all is wether you can wait or rather not have one.

Allrighty, got some stuff ordered including a new stain and new finish, hope these work out well for me. All I need to do is order sights.

Also bought a new Hickory ramrod as the ones that come with the kit are usually flexy beech wood.

I got the bores cleaned up and fitted the barrels to the tang. Now the tang and barrel and setting up in JB weld until the morning. Also fit the nose cap and trigger guard to the stock. Just had to drill holes for them is all, but its slowly coming tomorrow. Now if some darn parts would arrive!

Also came with the original box and the warranty/how to build, manual.

Progress is going awesome! I am finding myself actually humming as I file and sand. For some reason this one just feels special and enjoyable to work on. The JB Weld bedding job came out great, a nice rock solid bed for the tang and barrel to sit in.

Some progress. The cheek piece is always the worse part and thats when the whistling and humming turns to swearing LOL. My horse file took it down quickly but I had to swap over to a wooden dowel with 100grit sand paper around it to get it nice and smooth. Still have plenty of sanding to do in that area but I like to knock down the slow depressing stuff first and then move on LOL.

Before

After

Tomorrow I will take it all apart and then jewel the lock plate. As for now, I just polished the internals and lubed everything with a thin coat of moly to see how she felt.

And from last night, a sample of the wood grain with some boiled linseed oil on it.

Ahhhhh look at these shiny bores!  Got both 'em browned, greased up, new Hot Shot nipples installed and just waiting for the clean out screws to brown up.

The stuff at the front of the breech plugs is Frog Lube.

Front sights installed. Bubba in complete awe as well! I also polished the muzzles back to steel color so the new owners wouldnt have to deal with worn browning at the muzzle over time.

Bad picture but its all I can do inside for now.

Bottom rifle of course.

i soaked a Green M3 scuffing pad with boiled linseed oil and buffed the stocks high gloss down to the more classic looking finish. Its not glossy, yet its not DULL, its just right. It doesn't have a cheap plastic finish feel either, feels almost like straight boiled linseed oil so its not slippery.
