PostSubject: Western auto 310a (mossburg 500a)   March 22nd 2015, 8:17 am

Had to do a little research on the gun do to the guy at the gun shop told me the wrong company at first. Basically, it is a mossburg 500a made for western auto between the mid 70's and 80's. Can't remove the action. The forearm has a crack on the barrel side.

I have a new forearm on order and a tool to remove the nut.

I have to do an complete metal refinishing to do on it. Some one did an bad camo painting and looks likes rusty.

should be a good rebuilder corey! I always like project rifles to play with. Hell, i got 4 or 5 on the way to me as it is!

Strip that paint, clean and prep the service and hit it with camo green that walmart sells. Cut some patterns out, stick them over the stock and spray with another tan color. I did one for a friend and i really liked the way it came out.

They also sells "Skinz" for these things now. Just use a heat gun to shrink the stuff and bam! Cheap camo.

wood, going to ditch the wood going to a pistol grip style stock, planned that from the start of the project. which goes back before I even planned it.

I like that! It might not be comfy for bird hunting, but normal target range and defense, it will be excellent.

pretty much what the gun is going to before. maybe wild turkey when I get a new barrel for it a few years down the road.

after a little more research on why I can't remove the action. found out in the gun, you have to remove the magazine tube. there is a retaining spring on the tube that keeps the slide from coming out. best thing to do is replace it with a new one. headslap

Hey Cory, What is stamped on the gun Western Auto or Revelation? I have a 22 semiauto that I bought it around 1970 that I want to restore. It has Revelation stamped on it.

Did not see that stamped on the gun just what the gunshop said. When I was going research, they cataloged all there firearms made for western auto as revelation. Could of been the sight I was looking at.

Good luck on your restore job.

the reciever on the mossberg is aluminum so does not use regular blueing...I think birchwood casey makes some thing to use for aluminum...its more of an etching compound than a blueing salt...if you paint it get a self etching primer...you can use paint they use on aluminum wheels...

they say cerama coat will work on aluminum ...but you have to bake it on after the last coat....

this is birchwood's product

all the paint and primer is off. now I can tell what I am really getting into. these is the worst wear on the gun.

an area I am going to have to fix before I do anything with it.

the small metal piece on the magazine tube is what keeping the slide from coming off there is two of those. side note, I got the magazine tube off. pretty easily, all my research said that I would have to use heat or penetrating oil, lock it in a vise and use vise grips. i was wiping an tough area, and twisted it right out.

there was a question about an stamp mark

I still have a new forearm and new modern magazine tube to come in, I think I may need to order an spring.

i removed the old black using a method that scared me the most, OVEN CLEANER. I may have let it set for a minute or two then used 320gret wet/dry sandpaper. very light pressure, just enough to move the cleaner around and rough up the surface to prep it for what every I decide to do. added powder coating to the list. have everything I need to make some type of jig to set the receiver on to coat and bake.
