PostSubject: Those who have and those who will !   May 7th 2015, 12:49 am

Currently I have not yet Dry Balled any of my muzzleloaders and I do say yet! When this does happen I have a cork screwed ball puller that I can attach to the end of my range rod to pull the ball out. I also read where others used CO2 Dischargers to shoot the ball out down range. I was just wondering if you could remove the nipple and sprinkle enough blackpowder in the nipple hole and place the nipple back on and shoot the ball out that way? Would the nipple hole hold enough of a charge to do it that way? I know it's just a matter of time before I join the Dry Ball Club and become it's newest member! Can anyone share their personal experiences as to what would work and how they did it? I'm just curious and wondering. Respectfully, cowboys1062. Light Bulb

I just had issues similar to yours. I used my C02 discharger that I carry when riding my bike (somebody sells them set up for muzzleloaders I've been told), it was a little sloppy, but it worked great, I couldn't even find my patch nor ball...I really didn't look too hard. My friend, an accomplished percussion shooter said I should have removed the nipple and sprinkled a little 4F in the drum and just tried again, but that's only if you have a powder charge under the ball. He also said compressed air from an air compressor works, which is what you could also do if you forgot to dump your powder first.

Sprinkling a little powder in the nipple hole works perfect. You'd be surprised how little powder it takes to shoot out the ball.

If you have a flintlock with a non-removable vent liner, a CO2 discharger is almost mandatory if you can't remove it with a ball puller.

You still might be able to get some 4F through the touch hole.

X2

With a flinter, I can normally push a bit of 4fg powder into the bore and then fire it off.

Anybody ever try a little 4F to get a stuck ramrod out? I got one stuck once...I'll never double up on patches again. It took me a week to remove that one.

i've had to use a little powder under a cleaning brush one because it got stuck. Went to nylon after that with no problems.

No need to do that Jon. These brushes reverse easily. Read the description.

That works great unless you use a very tight patch and ball combination...I have had many a person try and blow them out when I have dry balled...And we always ending up using a ball puller...And it is almost impossible getting enough 4f behind a White Lighting vent...When I say a tight combination, I shoot a 40 cal and use a .400 ball with a .020 Teflon coated in front of 50 grains of Swiss 3f...Sometimes it helps to put a small amount of lubricant down the barrel before trying to pull the ball...Thanks for reading my thoughts and comments...

If you're going to make a PRB that tight. Best you don't dry ball. Stay focused when you're shooting.

I've only had one dry ball, and it happened at the range when someone was talking to me. Still my fault, but I don't talk to anyone anymore.

Yep have had it happen a couple of times and your right...Some nice person came over and decided to have a chat and low and behold it was the dry ball syndrome...The other time I did it was at The Spring Nationals and I had to take it to the gun shop and those fine gentlemen made me a necklace to be worn for the rest of the day and they checked on me too! It was good humor...
