PostSubject: What blackpowder ?   July 21st 2015, 2:10 pm

Folks I am thinking of trying some real BP in a couple of my sidelocks .  I've used Pyrodex and 777 .  A couple of questions .  I am assuming it would be FFG grade but what brand ?  Would 90 grains of BP equate to about 90 grains Pryrodex ?  Which is worse for barrel life Pyrodex or  real BP ?  As always any help is greatly appreciated.

Pyrodex is by far more corrosive than BP. I recommend you try Goex Olde Enysford. It has more power than Pyrodex, and about equal to T7. It also burns cleaner than most other BP's except Swiss which is too expensive now.

This is what you want. They have a 5lb minimum.

Last time I checked POWDERINC.COM had Goex going for $127.50 for 5 pounds if I remember correctly. Fees and shipping all included TYD. All you have to do is fill out a release form which was no big deal and fax it back to Naomi. That's who I spoke to and that's all you have to do. She explained that it's cheaper to buy 5#'s, of which you can mix the grades of the powder rather then buying 1 or 2 pounds at a time. That's when the HM fee is a killer.

Goex or Olde Eynsford 2fg for me.

Goex and Pyrodex RS are about equal volume for volume.

Graf is $129 for 5lbs, no form, and i'm talking about Olde Eynsford instead of regular Goex which is a weak powder.

Goex = less power than Pyrodex, and it's dirty.

Olde Eynsford = same power as T7, and cleaner.

Pretty obvious choice. It has more power, so you can use less which makes it cheaper to use.

Swiss is clean for a black powder, but it's still a black powder. Which means dirty.

T7 is much cleaner, but has it's own problems like a crud ring.
