PostSubject: First shot after cleaning   September 22nd 2015, 8:46 pm

My question is this...I thought I heard after cleaning your muzzleloader should u shoot a primer through your gun without powder or projectile. Like a fowling shot. I shot my gun tonight...first couple shots didn't hit the mark. Last time I shot was a week ago and it was on. Today the first 2 shots didn't hit the target but the last few were dead on. What the heck happened? I'm shooting new accura v2 with 110 grains bh209 and spitfire tz. Thanks for the help

Some rifles shoot better with a fouled bore, mine takes two shots before it settles down. It could be oil in the barrel after cleaning as well. Some guys will run an alcohol patch down and then a few dry patches if the hunt on a clean bore.

I always fire three primers to foul the barrel.

Some folks won't hunt with BH 209 unless they have fouled the barrel with a shot. It seems that the consensus is this powder works best in a fouled barrel.

What has helped me, and seems to work for me is, When I get ready shoot on a cold clean barrel, I will run 1 alcohol patch down the barrel, then 1 dry patch both sides of it, then fire 3 primers, and load it. First shot will be 1/2 inch from the other shot that follow, That is out of my Accura's and the MR's, The Optima will still need 2 fouling shot before it will zero in on center of target,

Thanks for the info...so from what I understand is that shooting primers will foul the barrel but wont gunk it up to the point I need to clean it before taking it out for the hunt. I primarily only hunt with the muzzle loader. So is it ok for me to foul the barrel the day before I take it out to hunt? Also, it sounds like to consensus is 2 to 3 primers thru to foul the barrel? Thanks for all the help

i hunt with a squeaky clean bore. Won't own a gun that puts rounds from a dirty bore more than more than about 1" outside the group.
