PostSubject: 250 FTX Hair Test   October 8th 2015, 1:12 pm

I shot a 165 lb. 7pt. at 208 yards yesterday morning with my .45 McGowen 1:22 twist using 95 grs. by weight of BH209 and the 250 FTX.  The buck was quartering away and I found what was left of the bullet in the opposite shoulder. He did not take a step so the bullet did an excellent job but I was a little surprised by what I found.  I don't know the muzzle velocity but think its about 2400 fps.

Congrats Scott on making that shot & harvesting a nice buck too! Did the case separate? Maybe it's just my eyes(which does & has happen-ed) but I can't quite tell in the pics.

Greg

Great shooting Scott, sounds like a good size deer (pic would help). By the looks of the FTX, as Greg said, it looks like the case separated from the bullet with that much weight loss.

The jacket was no where to be found. The chunk of lead weighs 127.5 grs. Will post a pic of the buck on Monday.

That is interesting because that bullet was designed for the 450 Bushmaster which runs in the 2200 FPS range. I would think at the yardage the deer was struck at would have brought the velocity well inside the designed range. I have used the 325 FTX on water jugs at close to the same range and it shed some weight but not that much. Maybe the Monoflex would be a better choice?

biddler2, I agree that the Monoflex might be a better choice if they would be a slip fit for his SML barrel, or if they would need to be knurled up a little to fit, From what I have heard and reading different forums about them, they are a bear cat to down size, if you can do it.

Looks like the same thing my 200 grain shockwaves are doing to me. The jacket is in there somewhere. When i find them, they usually peel off and veer off one way or the other. If you are careful pulling out the organs you can see the pathe it takes.

Here is a pic of the buck.  Nothing big but was a great hunt that morning.  This buck got in a fight with a smaller 8 pt. They locked up three different times before the smaller buck took off running and an even smaller buck standing there watching them go at it.  I hunted hard for the last three days.  Saw a lot of deer and a bunch of bucks but none over the 15" minimum on our club.

Thanks for all the comments guys.  Hope to hair test another 250 FTX in my smokeless rig this weekend.

Scott

Good looking deer that you shot, Our season doesn't start until Dec, So since I can not shoot a deer guess I will run to the range and shoot paper deer.

Nice healthy looking buck Scott! I can't get out with a gun until Nov 15 so I'll be out with my crossbow a little in the meantime to get my treestand legs back.
