.530 round balls were really tight loading in my .54 slow twist Sharon barrel.  My hand was hurting pounding on the ball starter to get them going.  So I ran over to Track of the Wolf today and purchased some .526 hand cast round balls. I'm thinking these should fit pretty good.  I'll be heading to the range in a day or two to try them.

That's a pretty common issue with the Sharon barrels. In fact, the Dutch Schoultz write up has this same issue and is how he got started with testing patches and lubes.

What thickness of patch did you use?

I "believe" they are .015 pillow ticking.  I tried two different patches and the results were the same, so both were probably the same thickness.

Try a .010 patch. Not ideal, but better than not shooting

Running JB in the bore might help a little.

btw Most pillow ticking is .018 unless it states otherwise.

Red/white & green/white pillow ticking is available. Most commonly the blue/white is .018" thick. The others are .014 and .016 thickness.

Blue/white pillow ticking is what I have, so .018 is probably the thickness.

that would explain why they are so tight! Even if its a fresh barrel, its going to take many many months of normal shooting to wear in so it loads nicely, Especially at the muzzle I notice on a fresh barrel.

I'd give some .015 patches a try.

Yes I'll do that.  I'll have some fun experimenting.

I was going through my muzzy stuff and found some "blue striped" pillow ticking cloth that states on the package that it is .015 - .016.  I'll give it a try this weekend.

You might think about using these patches from October Country. I've used these patches, and they load much easier. They also come lubed with bear grease which I really like.

Check them out.

Harbor Freight has a simple 'General Tools' - 3-Mode Digital Caliper for $25.17 that will take all the guess work out of patch and ball sizes.

The .526 round balls with the .015 - .016 patch worked a lot better.  I did place an order (at Muley's suggestion) for some October Country Lubed Daisy Patches .015. I'm interested to see how they work out.

I have 4 Sharon barrels in .50 cal and have not experienced any problems with .490 with .015 Ox Yoke patches.  They load easy and all shoot great. I don't know if the .54 is as true to size as the .50's are.  Did you check to make sure that the balls you were loading were actually sized as marked? You may wish to actually slug the barrel then measure the slug to get an accurate dimension. Good luck with the .54, Sharon is a great barrel!

Thanks oldarcher,  I haven't put a caliper on anything yet.  My brother has one so I'll check the .530 hand cast round balls I have.  I did receive my .015 "Daisy Cut" patches from October Country (Muley's recommendation) and with the .526 round balls have I do believe I'm good to go.

I ran into a 'feel' change when loading round ball, once.
It felt SO tight at the muzzle that I backed off. I think I
could have forced it. But, something just did not feel right.

So, I packed up and walked off the line, puzzled.

I knew I had the right size. I only own .50s and always
use .490. I had the same patches. But, I had just opened a
new box I had purchased from one of the guys that do their
own artisan thing.

I was talking it over with some of the gang and another guy
who makes and sells his own lead balls offered to check mine
with his caliper.

My new box was filled with a larger size ball! The guy who
made these had mis-labelled the box he sold to me!

So, be warned!

On the nice side, my new friend exchanged my falsely labelled
lead balls for a nice new (correctly sized) box.
