PostSubject: Deer With A Patched Round Ball   October 18th 2015, 11:21 pm

Today was the second day of Ft. Sill conventional muzzleloading deer season. Beat the brush for several hours before settling in a stand overlooking a pond that deer had been frequenting.

At about 19:15 i heard an animal drinking water. At the far end of the pond stood a buck. i fired and the buck went down, flopped about one minute and expired.

The ball took out three ribs and left an entry hole over 1 1/2 inches in diameter: It may have hit a branch before striking the buck. The ball did not exit. My camera went dead, i'll post a photo of the hole tomorrow.

Distance: About 45 yards
Gun: .54 TC New Englander
Powder: 120 grains of Black MZ
Ball: .530
Primer: Winchester #11 magnum
Patch lube: Leath R Seal

No exit needed:

I agree and congrats. But 120 gr. is too much for my wimpy butt.

They have a new rule for bucks in Fla. It has to have 3 points on one side (2 in a few coastal areas with poor soil) to be legal. The only buck I've seen this year would qualify except he was 75 yds. away during bow season.

I agree that the load was too heavy for a PRB. That's why it didn't exit. Too much expansion.

I've killed an elk cow with just 80gr of BP at 70yds.

I have shot 1,500 lb. buffalo with 80 grains of 3F at 65 yards and it put them down. It's all about hitting the right spot as close as you can get, not gut shots like some do at long distances.

I use 100Gr. of Pyrodex in my 54Cal. Most areas around here Bucks have to have 4 points on one side. Real bugger counting points Mad

Congratulations on the Deer.

Colorado has a long list of laws that make no sense.

Ok the County I live don't have Antler Restrictions. Had a Spike couple weeks ago, 20 yards Very Happy  I figure it eats just fine along with the Doe I killed.

Bad thing is I know we have enough meat in the Freezer but getting on these Hunting Forums and two New Deer Rifles, our Cabin we have expanded to where it is very comfortable on 55K acres of hunting land, month of Firearm Seasons coming up sure gets my mind working. Rolling Eyes
