Just curious what the coldest temp you've hunted in with your muzzle loader and what load did you use?

Patched ball shooters, what patch lube did you use?

Conical shooters, what lube was on your conical, if any.

I've hunted in the low 30's before with patched round ball and bore butter. Snow and then warm temps later in the evening caused a great deal of rust issues despite the bore butter.

I have hunted in the 10-20 degree range several times and used BH209 with a sabot and Fiocchi primers. I've never used PRB or lubed conical which is probably more of the information you were looking for.
I have a friend that has a percussion side lock that needs to be shot and tuned. I will try to say him towards your lube if he decides to play around with it. He has bore butter but has never used it but I think the previous owner did.

It's been years but before inlines I hunted with a TC Hawken. I used 80gr of RS & a patched round ball.
We had just received a huge amount of snow overnite & the temp was -10. Windchill brought it to approx -30.
I don't know if the gun would have fired or not because even the deer were smart enough not to be out in that weather!!
I have hunted with other guns in this kind of weather & shot deer. I'll tell you this.....you can't get that chest cavity opened up fast enough to get your frozen hands warm. I was a lot younger then. I'm smart enough to stay in the house now, lol

In the 60s and 70s i hunted back east using a muzzleloader, usually an old original one. Used 3F Du Pont powder and neatsfoot oil for patch lube. Often hunted when the temperature was below zero F. Never had any special problems. The gun always went bang when it was supposed to.

.54 cal 1"x32"
90 gr Goex FFg primed w FFFFg
.535 cast ball (carried .530s for follow up)

I like cold weather, but not bitter cold. Zero is close to my limit for having fun.

Anything over 60 degrees is a heat wave for me. So, my zone is 0-60 degrees.

I planned a hunt in northern Wisconsin with my brother. The day I arrived a front moved through with 8" of snow and a 35 MPH west wind with higher gusts. His lawn furniture had blown to the end of a cul-de-sac.
The next morning was -13 degrees with a 25 MPH wind. I lasted from daybreak until 10:00 and made it to an abandoned farm house. It was an oasis in the "arctic". I've never been so cold. No

We hunt in western NY and Ohio, late December and early January.  We hunt anywhere from ambient temps in the -10 to 20 above range.  Windchill on a few days have been well below -30.

Here in Vermont our muzzleloading season is in early December. Two years ago it was -3 degrees on a Saturday when I was hunting. Was using a T/C Firehawk, .54, with a 225 grain, .44 cal., Hornady FTX .430, with a Hornady white .54 sabot. Ignition was a musket cap. Funny thing was, it did not feel that cold. Was a great day, even though I did not get a shot.

CVA Apex, BH209, CCI magnum primers, I don't think it matters how cold it gets, the rifle & the load can take it as long as the hunter can!  I've fired this load in very cold Mi. temps, no problem.

Like DocMort said our late muzzleloader in January is cold. A couple years ago it was around -10 with the windchill being much colder. I had my gun in my lap and my hand sitting on top of my scope and when I got up to move I had to peel my hand off the scope because it had froze to it. The hand warmer pack in my glommit had caused some moisture and of course with it being that cold out.

I shot two deer that day and the load was: Hornady XTP 300 grain (.430), Harvester Green Crush rib sabot, 110 grains BH209, W209 primer.
