I shot this buck coming out of the swamp on my property yesterday morning head on in the lower neck. Even though I had Hornady leverevolution ammo in my cartridge holder I used my 405gr hard cast (lee mold) with 26gr of IMR4759 because I knew it would be a close range shot.

Good job, when I saw the Apex 45-70 my mind went to a smokeless build not the cartridge!  That is a nice looking Buck.

I just got an Apex 45-70 that I have wanted one for a long time Carlos said he got 6 in I see where you used 4759 powder I can't believe IMR discontinued it. I use it in my Encore 45-70 conversion as a booster I did locate 2 pounds but every where I go no luck. And some that have it won't ship. By the way that is one fine looking Buck

I don't see any wound. The buck probably saw that 45-70 and had a myocardial infarction. Very Happy
Very nice buck! Well done.

Not a lot of hydrostatic shock with a slow moving 45-70 round......but a great wound channel and with everything smaller than an elk, tend to go down quickly.......my rule is keep putting lead into an elk till they stop breathing....they can be tough critters!

Just to keep this thread going a bit longer....here's few photos of 45-70 kills....these are repeats.
This last buck I killed in the back yard.

The first mature whitetail I killed after moving to Idaho..... mounted.

Many moons ago outside of Craig Colorado.....and long before I had added the patch box and pewter forend.

Very nice buck and good looking rifle.
I use the 45-70 in my Sharps and load 30grn of IMR 4198 and a 405grn Cast with Fed primers. It has always done well on deer. I haven't shot over 200 yds with it.
Good luck on your future hunting.

I think your right Ron, never thought of it in that term before, thank you. That's one to remember "myocardial infarction".  Very nice buck ...

The buck was facing me and I hit him in the lower neck really in the brisket and the bullet never exited. It made it about 3/4 though but lodged in the spine after passing through the vitals and guts.

There's a ton of powders that work well in .45-70. H335, 748, Reloder 7, N-133, and IMR 3031 are just a few. They all provide better ballistics than SR 4759.
