Shot a 100 lb. doe Saturday morning at 75 yds. with my .45 McRem using the 250 FTX wool wad and a duplex of 10/50 4759/4198. She only went 15-20 yds.  It appears that again the jacket and core separated but did exit.  These bullets are inexpensive and accurate and just kill deer.

Exit

Great review Scott. The bullet may come apart but it's certainly done the job for you. I'm not a fan of jacket separations but you can't argue with the results.

I always read bullet reviews & take them with a grain of salt, especially when it's a popular bullet like the FTX. So many guys use them that you're gonna get some negative reviews && most likely are coming from people that shouldn't have taken the shot that they took anyway. Then they blame the bullet.
Well, that's MHO.

Great job,

Greg

Great shooting Scott, looks like the FTX has twice the knock down power like that. Great report. Our season starts in a week and half, will do a hair test with the FTX on Iowa deer.

Greg,  I'm with you on reviews from people I don't know. Its a lot easier to blame the bullet than the man behind the trigger.

Dave,  I look forward to seeing how the FTX does on one of those Iowa giants. Good Luck....

I, for one, look at reviews as a starting point, then I go out and see if I can back up the claims.  We've all heard the " hit him right behind the front shoulder and he got away " story.  You can put a rock through the lungs of a whitetail and he is dead.  I used SST's for many years.  They will definitely kill deer.  Very accurate as well.  I just think that you should use whatever works best. With all the money and time used on hunting a whitetail, why put anything less than the best down your muzzleloader?  I've used many of the bullets we see on our forum.  I've yet to see the equal of a Barnes.

Great shooting Scott, and yes the FTX's will put a smack on a deer with out any problem as you know by now. Again great shooting. Now let's see what Dave can do with a IA giant.

Greg we don't care which bullet you use just shoot a deer. Would hate to see a grown man cry because he had to send his gun back . LOL

Maybe my son could put one of the sub guns to good use. He has been the lucky rabbits foot this year. The 4 weekends we have hunted we have brought meat home. Plus our two biggest bucks. Greg you are lucky that MIchigan is much closer than Iowa. I could bring him up there in just a few hours. Dave when we went to Wyoming this year we went through Iowa and it is much further. But he did really like the big I-80 truck stop so he might be up for a road trip.
Good luck to both of you guys this season!

Scott, that is exactly what you might see. Deer season so far has been dismal at best. It opened on Nov 15 & runs thru the 30th then a one week break before ML season. I don't think I've heard 25 gun shots total so far 😒 & nobody has taken any large bucks. I had found one fresh scrape on opening day & it was never touched again & no other sign. This is the third year that I have not found any rubs either. I suspect that the majority of the young deer even though few are being killed & that is really hampering herd growth 😒😒 but I'll keep looking for a deer!!

Greg I hope things improve for you. Just a few years ago our herd was really down but the last two years have really improved. Most does have a least one fawn with them and our club has harvested some of the best bucks in several years.  Good luck during the rest of your season.😀

Shot another doe yesterday at 170 yards with the same combo and the same results.  She went about 20 yards and that was it.  Only have 2 weeks left to hunt hope to get one more doe for the freezer....

Dave I don't have a son but do have two daughters.  Wish they would hunt with me but they just don't have an interest.  Good Luck with filling your freezer!

Don't feel bad I have a son that showed no interest in hunting my daughter completed a hunter safety course and one day we drove a long way to my hunting property she shot one squirrel and said I want to go home That was the last time she hunted. Kids they don't know what they are missing Well at 51 she has started target shooting has several guns. It's great when kids take a liking to hunting
