Deer season is over in Alabama and we have 29 days to hunt squirrels. All I have is a .50 cal. What do you guys recommend I can use in my Hawken or is it just too much?

yes you can use it and go for head shots or bark the squirrels by shooting the tree/branch and killing it with the fragments.

just load it down with 40 gr. or so of powder, check for poi.. should be plenty for 25-30 yds and wont mushroom a bunch and tear them up so bad.. of course a 1/2 in. ball still going to put a big hole in a little squirrel.

Years ago I bought a traditions .36cal barrel ( how I got my user name as it was the model) and man, you hit a rabbit with that sucker and it was WORSE than hitting it with my 50cal! They just completely turned inside out with that lil .36!

a .32 or .36 will blow them up just as bad if loaded pretty hot.. I shot a big old fox squirrel thru the front shoulders with a Hopkins Allen .36 under hammer with 40 gr. of powder and all I found was his rib cage and back legs.. dropped back to 30 gr. after that. If you hit shoulder bone with the .32 it does a lot of damage also..
