PostSubject: Going to ask the orthopedic surgeon if I can go shoot!   May 7th 2016, 3:47 pm

I am going stir crazy just looking at my front stuffers. You can clean and rust protect only so much as an excuse to handle the muzzleloaders.

So, I have an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday. I will ask if I can come out of the full leg stabilizer and go to the outdoor range. Physical therapy is coming along nicely. Flexibility has increased. I still need to recover a little strength in the knee.

If he says "Yes," I am going to be out on that range with a car full of black powder necessities. (However, it will be the car with no clutch. Not ready for that, yet)

If he's not a shooter or hunter, he'll say no.

The full-leg stabilizer permits me to get around, but very slowly. It has metal bars that go down the sides from thigh to ankle and another behind the leg so that the leg won't suddenly bend. Hauling the shooting box, rifle and other shooting paraphernalia up from the basement, out to the car and returning them at the end of the day is the real challenge.
I will have to see where my energy level is after physical therapy, tomorrow.
I won't even mention the shooting to the orthopedic surgeon. The key will be if he lets me shed that leg stabilizer and put on a less restrictive knee brace.

Cripes! Stop babying yourself. I went shooting with two broken vertebra. It took me 15 min to get my socks boots on. I didn't post about it. I just did it.

Ron, all you have to do is ask yourself if it would be worth going through the whole procedure again if you happen to re-injure it. Then act accordingly.

No, I didn't post about breaking my back. Do I have to explain the socks part to you too?

Patocazador hits the nail on the head. If the knee gives out and bends too far, then the tendon tears out of the holes drilled in the knee. The area, as it is, has to take all of my 145 pounds of body weight (give or take 85 pounds Smile ).
I wrote the post mainly out of frustration and exasperation.

You have an unnatural affection for your socks and you dream of posting about them. clown
Whatever floats your boat, Muley.

You don't need to explain it to me... I don't think I want to know.  What a Face

Tape a couple slats to your leg, pull on pants with suspenders and do as Chester did? Smile

I always try to catch Chester bending his leg. I never did. He had that down pretty good.

Hows buddy doing these days? has his symptoms cleared?

Ron, I highly recommend that you just fight back the urge and take some more time to heal. Its not worth the possibility of a slip and having to go through it again.

Ron
We missed you today but I understand. I did however pop the swinger offhand twice once with the Renegade and once with the Hawken at 100 yards just because we missed you. That 58 caliber makes her swing. Took 3 shots to hit it twice but I was happy. It sure was a great day to shoot. Don Galleger showed up just before we left with his lefty 40 cal flinter he made. Phil couldnt make but I had a good friend go with me. Get well soon. When are you thinking they are going to do the heart surgery? Al

Once I am completely mobile and can do stairs. The way PT is progressing, I think that I should be able to do the stairs in 2 weeks. My visit with the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow should tell more. As soon as I can estimate the time more accurately, then we can set the date.
Thanks for checking!

The full leg stabilizer is off, to be used only going down stairs!

After all this time, the focus of physical therapy is practicing the art of walking. And, I don't need that practice! The next step is to gradually start stairs, low ones at first and the progressing to real size stairs as the quad muscles strengthen. I am thrilled to be at this stage!

One good result of all this is that my appetite diminished and I have lost 20 pounds. There is muscle loss, but enough fat loss that I now fit in pants a full size smaller.

If weather permits, I'll plan to take a front stuffer up to the Clear Creek County Sportsman's Club Range near Idaho Springs on Friday.
Ron

Good job ol man! Just keep things easy and it will go by so much faster. 20lb weight loss will be perfect come hunting season. At your age, I'd have to say, What muscle! Laughing

Check the weather. Nice and hot one day, cold, rain and blowing wind the next. Driving me crazy!

Very Happy Well, young feller, I was training with a strength coach at a gym called Next Level who used to be a partner with my son when he was a strength coach. That all stopped when the cardiologist told me that intensive weight training could build up blood pressures that could blow out my aorta, and that ain't good. So we switched to a routine increasing the work load, but decreasing the intensity.
These pushups were part of my training:

Even the high workload workouts stopped after the knee injury. Even at my age, I was improving week by week in both size and strength. Of course all that comes much more slowly with age and reduced testosterone levels.
I was working hard to be like my role model:
